About Kawauchi Hackhoh

Fascinated by the archaic beauty in the shape of Chinese characters of ancient times, I have created works of calligraphy and seal carving. Although my main field is classical seal craving, I have tried various forms of expression free from tradition. Based upon the elegance of the Chinese classics, I seek to create fresh works with modernity and sense of Japanism. Getting a clue from Chinese character tattoos in fashion among Europeans and Americans, I attempt body painting with the authentic beauty of calligraphy.

Kawauchi Hackhoh is a calligrapher and seal carver of Chinese tradition. Through repeated visits to China in pursuit of its origin since starting to study calligraphy in his early years, Hackhoh awakened to the beauty of seal carving. He makes public works of seal carving and calligraphy in major exhibitions including Japan Fine Arts Exhibition, one of the most publicly acknowledged exhibitions of the fine arts in Japan, as well as independent group shows.
